How FilmLink works
Rules, a worked example and ways to play
A daily movie connection game
FilmLink is a free daily movie game about connecting two films through their cast and crew. Start on one movie, choose someone who worked on it, then choose another film from their credits. Keep building your chain until you reach the target. You follow credits rather than guess a hidden movie title.
What counts as a link?
Each move from a film to a person, or from a person to a film, counts as one link. A film → actor → film connection is two links. Use the cast and crew links shown on the page, including directors and writers; composers are available when shown. The game checks whether each connection is allowed.
A worked example: four links
Here is one route from The Dark Knight to Good Will Hunting:
- Choose Christian Bale from The Dark Knight's cast.
- Choose Ford v Ferrari from his films.
- Choose Matt Damon from Ford v Ferrari's cast.
- Choose Good Will Hunting from his films to reach the target.
That is four links: two people and two moves to another film. Other routes may work too; this example is not a claim that four is the shortest possible route.
Look beyond the cast
A shared director can connect films just as an actor can. For example, Inception → Christopher Nolan → Interstellar is a two-link route through their director. Check the current puzzle's rules first: a Hard Mode restriction can rule out a connection that works in the ordinary game.
Choose your next game
The Daily gives everyone the same pair of films, with a new puzzle at midnight UTC. You can play as a guest. Hard Mode adds a daily restriction, and the Back Catalogue lets you revisit past puzzles.
In multiplayer, Quick Match offers Speed and Fewest Links games. Hard Match adds its own rules and scoring. You can also create a private lobby for friends. Check the selected mode's rules before you start.
Practise before the daily puzzle
The interactive tutorial above guides you through a short route. It starts with a five-second preview, then lets you make the connections without a running game timer or a leaderboard score. Completing the tutorial does not use up today's Daily attempt.
